Sedentary Behaviors Found in College Students
A lot of college students indicate high levels of sedentary time due to a lot of many lifestyle factors including physical inactivity. For the most part, college students prioritize a lot of other things happening in their life instead of their own health. We could see that their sedentary time is composed of recreational screen time, education, and social. Students would report that they spend over 12 hours of their day sedentary. With increased sedentary time, there is a correlation with sleep and body mass index.
Relationships Shared with Sedentary Time
Weight
BMI and Obesity
It was found that weight significantly correlates with sedentary time amongst college students. The higher sedentary time an individual experiences the more likely they are overweight or obese when compared to a normal weight/underweight individual. Overweight/obese undergraduates reported to have a greater time in sedentary socializing.
Poor Sleep Quality
Total sedentary time and screen time shares a relationship with poor sleep quality. Increased sedentary time indicates poorer sleep quality. Recreational screen time might be the biggest contributor to sleep quality. Reduction of screen time can serve as an appropriate behavioral intervention for college students with poor sleep and decreased academic performance.
Stress
Interesting enough, there were no distinct relationships shown between stress and sedentary behaviors.
